O'Neil she was in her high-school times when she took part in the auditions, auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the beginning of 2005. Her vocal performance impressed the judges, and so she was voted into the final 100th stage. Her performance was highly applauded by judge. But, O'Neil suffered a significant drop during her Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for top 3, and the bottom 2. The judges were surprised by her performance and advised viewers to choose contestants who sang well and had a strong voice, like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were such awe-inspiring that she was never in the bottom three once again. She was the judge. Werner was confident, following two more stunning performances that O'Neil would be the winner of the Canadian Idol competition, as well as the first woman and youngest ever to win the show, following the September 7 finals in 2005. O'Neil received a rousing ovation from Canadian Premier Paul Martin for winning Canadian Idol.
