O'Grady's father is Jim O'Grady. Her mother, Jan, was a financial planner. She was raised by her grandparents in Wheaton located in Illinois and was graduated in 1981 with a diploma from Wheaton-North High School. The model was featured on several commercials on television, but then moved to Los Angeles. O'Grady began her career modeling for Montgomery Ward and making commercials. She was a part of the 1988 romantic comedy, She's Having a Baby and was later a regular character in ABC Drama China Beach, opposite Dana Delany. She also guest starred on a number of other shows as well as appeared in made-for films and television shows. Donna Abandando was her first large role on ABC's crime drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady, who played the large-haired secretariat from 1993 to 1996 received Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting Actress. In 1995, O'Grady was awarded the Screen Actors Guild Award Outstanding Ensemble Performance in Drama Series alongside the entire cast.
