Gerina went to Goddard High School for her higher education in high school. She was the winner of the New Mexico State Golf Tournament in her high school years. Also, she was a volleyball player who competed at the national level. She went to in the University of Texas in 2003. While in her senior years she was a winner of every tournament that was entered. During her undergraduate career she was named Conference USA individual champion player of the year and UTEP Female Athletics Player of the Year.
