Annette Funicello was 13 years old when she was discovered by studio head Walt Disney dancing in an amateur production called Swan Lake in Fullerton California. Funicello did not audition to join The Mickey Mouse Club and joined after the beginning of season one of the show, which was to the dislike by their Mickey Mouse Club peers.
